Having refusal skillz, especially with a “z,” is a useful thing. Skills make it easier to stick to your choices, which is why knowing how to turn down a drink is a useful skill for drinkers and non-drinkers alike. Not drinking is the safest drinking strategy, but using refusal skills can help you use safer drinking strategies like spacing drinks out over time or avoiding drinking games, as well. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with saying no, it can feel a little uncomfortable at first. That discomfort goes away with practice, especially if you understand the reasons you are saying no. When it comes to skillz, practice makes perfect.
