Each October, the Mason community looks forward to the fun and interactive program Breastival®! Through the use of fun games, prizes, and food that are all tied to the overall breast cancer awareness theme, the program aims to raise breast cancer awareness and educate the Mason community on available health resources. Students, staff, faculty and community members learn about risk factors, signs and symptoms, early detection and breast self-exam techniques.
After attending Breastival®, Mason community members will feel empowered to make informed decisions about their health. Support from various community groups and student groups like the Student Nurses’ Association and Zeta Tau Alpha make this program an annual success. The Student Nurses’ Association provides tutorials on breast self-exams and connects people with resources. Their expertise is life- saving information. Each year over 200,000 women and 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer, however, when detected early the 5-year survival rate is 98%.
