Assessments and Support
WAVES staff is available to talk with students, faculty and staff who are curious or concerned about their (or someone else’s) alcohol/other drug use. Some students seek out WAVES on their own, while others are required to visit due to conduct violations. Appointments are encouraged.
In these discussions, WAVES staff explores current and past substance use, reviews the impact on students’ lives, and provides relevant educational information. When needed, WAVES staff works to connect students with appropriate on-campus or off-campus resources for further education, counseling or treatment.
WAVES also offers Brief Substance Abuse Feedback and Education (BSAFE), a short-term and evidence-based educational intervention for Mason students who are at-risk for or experiencing problems due to their drinking or drug use. Students meet individually with WAVES staff for two one-hour interviews and complete homework. Through a customized feedback profile and information-sharing, BSAFE aims to motivate students to reduce their alcohol or drug use in order to decrease negative consequences.
